So The Last Knight plays around with the idea that the robots in disguise where part on an ancient mystic robot order who gave the wizard Merlin the power he was know for in the legends in the form of a staff, and they also bestowed the sword wielded by King Arthur. Now in modern day the staff is hidden and the evil robot alien queen Quinntessa wants it back so she can destroy earth and restore Cybertron. To do this she brain washes earth's favorite autobot Optimus Prime, who is sent to earth to kill all who try and keep the staff from him. this is the last we see of Prime till the final half of the film as we trudge through a messy plot full of you typical action film tropes, like Cade gaining the power of the knights through a strange metal thing, Viviane's lineage and the crazy old guy who tends to know everything about the history of transformers on earth. We also have the young lead who is set to become an adopted family member for Cade fr some reason. Now as good a character Izabella is in the early part of the film, she doesn't have enough screen time and that is disappointing. This is a character with so much more to give the story, while instead we get the obvious love story between Cade and Viviane.
The autobots are as good as always, which is good as this is the reason we are all here, but when the action finally gets to the screen there is very little of it. The Last Knight is more filler than anything with 30% throughout being autobot action.
While this isn't a great film, it also isn't a terrible film. It is summer blockbuster fun and this is why people still go to the cinema to watch it. Kids will love parts of it, adults will watch it for nostalgia. I do wish there was more action overall and maybe so of the language was toned down a little, especially as this is really a film aimed at kids, but overall if you have a lazy day in this is a good way to kill a few hours.
