During my rare non-podcasting time that I get recently I tend to give a few different horror films a try over on Amazon Prime. Prime is a pretty decent source for lesser known horror films and as you saw in my last two reviews they aren’t half bad. My review this time around is Countdown, a 2019 horror film about the moment Carol Vorderman final went fucking ape shit and killed the audience of the hit channel 4 TV show….. okay so it has nothing to do with THAT Countdown but you have to admit that would make one hell of a story.
No this is the 2019 Amazon Original Countdown which sees a young nurse fighting for her life, very literally, after she downloads and app that predicts when you will die. This is very much going into Final Destination territory as we know from those films you can’t cheat death. The film starts as you picture a teen horror to start, at a part of young people drinking and having a good time. A group of friends find the app by mistake and peer pressure and booze take over and they all decide to download it. Obviously one of the group are going to die soon, an low and behold it’s the nice shy girl in the group. She is trying to be a smart one, not letting her drunk boyfriend drive her home, but she still meets her maker as the app strikes zero. A nice little touch at the start is something that will become a big story point later on and that is the breaking the user agreements notice. I like this, it’s basically the demons huge up yours to who ever is trying their luck against it.
The rest of the film however is more in the same vein as The Ring where t Quinn, our leading lady of this film, tries to find a way to break the curse. Quinn is joined by her sister Jordan, who during a bratty session downloaded the app and love interest Matt who enter the film midway after overhearing Quinn at a phone shop, trying to do the same thing she was aiming for. Character wise Quinn, Jordan and Matt are actually likeable! God do you know how rare this is in horror recently. The trio are brilliant in the film which as a whole is a very well acted film overall.
Countdown is a mish mash of different types of horror style, the idea is, as I said earlier, very Final Destination (the end scene is VERY much this) while the finale lead up is dotted with good jump scares and a more find the curse feel. The action and jumps are well down, the demon design I very much love and as a whole Countdown is a bloody enjoyable watch. YES there are a few plot holes, the final minute lasts 15 minutes film time wise, but I don’t care! It was fun, it was very late 90’s early naughties horror which I will always be a sucker for. A shout out aswell to P.J Byrne who plays the role of Father John, he is one of my favourite characters in this and personally want more films with this character.
Overall Countdown is a must watch.
